The Jackson County prosecutor’s office has officially charged two young men with second-degree murder and armed criminal action following the fatal shooting of a 16-year-old boy outside a gas station in south Kansas City on May 10, 2025. The victim, identified as Matim Nunley, succumbed to gunshot wounds resulting from an altercation with the suspects.
The incident took place at a Shell gas station located at 8435 E. 63rd St., where video footage allegedly captured crucial evidence of the confrontation. According to court records, Lamont Buchanan, 19, was seen confronting Nunley, seizing him by the jacket, and aiming a firearm in his direction. Meanwhile, K’Vontaye Redmond, 23, also brandished a handgun during this encounter.
As the situation escalated, Nunley reportedly tried to back away, seeking to retrieve his own firearm. However, he dropped his gun as Buchanan discharged his weapon, fatally striking Nunley. Prosecutors further allege that after shooting Nunley, Buchanan picked up the victim’s firearm, and both he and Redmond fled the scene of the incident.
Law enforcement authorities were quick to respond, apprehending Redmond shortly after the shooting occurred. Buchanan was arrested later that same day. Both suspects are currently being held at the Jackson County jail, with Buchanan maintaining no bond status, while Redmond’s bond has been set at $100,000.
Bond hearings for the two suspects are scheduled for May 27 and May 28, respectively. These hearings will determine whether the court will modify their bond status or maintain the current conditions pending further proceedings.
This tragic shooting has heightened concerns regarding youth violence and gun-related incidents in the Kansas City area. The death of Matim Nunley, a young individual with a whole future ahead of him, has sent ripples of grief and anger through the community. Local leaders and residents express a desire for increased measures to address the issue of gun violence, especially among teenagers.
Gun violence has been an ongoing issue in many urban areas across the United States, with increasing attention on the role of youth in such incidents. In recent years, various community programs have sought to curb youth access to firearms while promoting conflict resolution skills. Still, incidents like the shooting of Matim Nunley underline the challenges that communities face in creating safe environments for young people.
The timing of this case also coincides with ongoing discussions concerning legislative measures aimed at reducing gun violence, including proposed restrictions on firearm access for individuals under 21. The outcome of this case may influence public perception and future policy decisions regarding youth and firearms in Kansas City and beyond.
The community continues to mourn the loss of Nunley, reflecting on the broader implications of gun violence and the urgent need for solutions to protect young lives.
