Emergency personnel respond to a tragic traffic incident in Kansas City, highlighting the importance of road safety.
Two recent traffic fatalities in Kansas City have raised concerns about road safety. The first incident involved a driver who was run over by their own truck at a gas station. The second involved a man attempting to board a moving tractor-trailer on the interstate. These incidents contribute to a total of 33 traffic deaths this year, reflecting a decline compared to previous years but still highlighting the dangers on Kansas City roads.
Kansas City experienced two tragic traffic incidents on June 15, 2025, resulting in the deaths of two drivers. These fatalities have brought the total number of traffic deaths in the city to 33 for the year, illustrating a slight decline from the previous year’s toll of 48 fatalities by the same date.
The first incident occurred at approximately 2:45 PM at the Fast Stop gas station located at 7100 Eastwood Trafficway. A driver, while filling their Ford F-150, faced an unexpected situation as the vehicle began to roll backwards for reasons that remain unclear. As the driver attempted to re-enter the vehicle through the passenger side, they fell to the ground and were tragically run over by their own truck.
Emergency personnel arrived at the scene, but unfortunately, the driver was pronounced dead before any medical assistance could be rendered. This incident is particularly alarming as it marks the 33rd traffic fatality in Kansas City this year.
In a separate incident on the same day, a man was killed on Interstate 70 while trying to board a moving tractor-trailer. The man was driving a black GMC Sierra pickup when he exited his vehicle in an attempt to jump onto a white Freightliner tractor-trailer
The driver of the Freightliner was changing lanes at the time. The GMC driver ran alongside the trailer and grabbed a retention strap in an ill-fated attempt to board the moving vehicle. However, he lost his grip and fell onto the roadway. The rear axle of the Freightliner subsequently ran over him, leading to fatal injuries. Emergency responders arrived quickly, but he was also pronounced dead at the scene. The identity of this individual has not yet been released, and the driver of the Freightliner was reported to have sustained no injuries.
The deaths of both drivers contribute to a total of 32 traffic fatalities in Kansas City for the year 2025, which marks a decrease from the 47 fatalities reported at the same time last year. While any loss of life is tragic, the overall decline in traffic fatalities suggests that improvements in safety measures could be having an impact. However, these recent incidents underscore the dangers present on roadways and serve as a reminder of the inherent risks that drivers and pedestrians face daily.
As these two incidents highlight the risks associated with vehicle operation, local officials may urge drivers to exercise extreme caution and remain vigilant on the roads. Additionally, authorities continue to emphasize the importance of safety measures that could contribute to reducing fatal accidents in the future.
